Here I present my selection of two fantastic orchestras - Roberto Firpo and Julio De Caro -, that were not only historically very important because they were pioneers of tango, but also left us many beautiful songs which are, unfortunately, rarely played in ...

From these two orchestras I built 6 tandas (4T-4T-3V-4T-4T-3M) - not because I suggest to play them exactly like this in a milonga, but because I want to demonstrate how music of Firpo and De Caro could be used for dancing; and the possibilites are energetically very different.

In the first tanda we hear music of Roberto Firpo's orchestra from 1928-1929. In those times his orchestra was one of the most successful, and he was in strong competition with Francisco Canaro; but Firpo's orchestra played more elastic, subtle, and refined. This music is tender and romantic, yet the rhythm is strong and invites to dance. The singer Teófilo Ibañez was one of the popular estribillo singers, he sings slightly nasally, as it was in fashion, and very sentimental.

Then we hear Julio De Caro's orchestra from around 1950. Three of the four songs are composed by Julio De Caro himself. The orchestra plays in the avart-garde style with which it was successful in the twenties; in particular with a lot of rubato (delays which are "caught up" again), and very expressive, but with a warmer sound inspired by Osvaldo Pugliese. The instrumental sections play in several voices and often contrapuntally, which means different but harmonically matching melodies; and we hear wonderful solos of violin, bandoneon, and piano, as well as percussion on the instruments played with different techniques. The last song of the tanda is a masterpiece dedeicated to the colleague Anibal Troilo.

Firpo's vals tanda from 1936-1937 demonstrates us what swinging valses are. These songs with the swinging rhythms, together with dizzying violins, irresistibly gets the dancers to the floor.

In the early fourties, other musicians were the protagonists, and Julio De Caro's orchestra followed the trend they established. He created a number of wonderful romantic tangos, some of which from 1942 are compiled in this tanda; two composed by Julio De Caro himself. Especially the song Buen amigo is very decarean, contrapuntal with wonderful a capella passages of various instruments.

The Firpo tanda from 1939-1941 follows the trend to rhythmic high-energy music that was dominant around 1940, inspired by Juan D'Arienzo, Three of the four pieces are composed by Firpo himself. The brilliant musicians play with maximal energy, especially the pianist (probably Horacio Salgán) plays with extreme virtuosity.

In the De Caro milonga tanda from around 1940 we can enjoy the liveliness and the crazy enthusiasm of the orchestra. Saca chispas is one of the most energetic milongas ever. And the classic song No hay tierra como la mía in De Caro's version - with extreme rubatos especially in the bandoneons and the singing - is hilarious to dance.

I would have loved to add a tanda of Julio De Caro from the twenties; this was the time when the orchestra was at the top of the avant-garde. I couldn't because of the restriction to 22 songs.
