Latin News for the beginning 2002

Dear friends of Latin American and Caribbean music!

Everything worked out fine (at least at Danza y Movimiento): On January 1st, punctually, we switched over to EURO.

This also required increasing our prices in some cases as well as reducing them in others. It might be different in your country, but in Germany business for small companies dealing with world music is becoming more and more difficult: The "Big Ones" (meaning major record companies, the music industry in general, chain stores and big department stores) have discovered world music in the recent years. The "Big Ones" are not really cheaper than we are, but they are able to work more economically. (An example: Changing our system to EURO does require about as much effort for us as for a large company. Considering the total budget of a "Big One", the costs involved for them could be compared to us buying a stamp for the price 0,56 Euro. In our own budget, the same change of system equals the purchase of a new delivery van. And those side effects of the currency change is only one of many examples in this context.)

For these and other reasons, almost all the well-known record stores for world music in Germany went bancrupt last year. In the case of two remaining world music stores, the managers resigned on 31.12.2001. The most well-known bankruptcy is the one of Canzone in Berlin. We consider this a great loss, for Canzone and the other stores were invigorating competitors to us as well us our customers.

In order to be able to guarantee good service and a good selection, we were forced to increase some of our prices. For economic reasons, we actually would have to charge more than 25 Euro for many import CDs. We don't and we try to keep up our idealistic spirit and stick to minor price increases. Of course, anybody can choose to buy at the "Big Ones" or directly in the countries we import from. This is often slightly cheaper, but to us and other mini suppliers it causes severe consequences in the music market.

Well, in case you do not want to spend so much money for a CD, we recommend the special pages in our internet catalogue. There, we offer CDs for a very reasonable price on a regular basis. In our "bargain box" those CDs are indicated for a limited time. Then, the CDs are either cutout or they are sold for the normal price again.
